Buy Back Tariff FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

-         If I want to install a wind turbine, or photovoltaic power system, will you buy any  excess electricity that I generate?

 -        Yes, we will buy units which you export to our network.

-        You will need 'States of Jersey' planning permission before you can install a wind turbine or photovoltaic panels.

-        You will also need to use a certified installer to install the wind turbine, who is familiar with the requirements for fitting embedded generators.

-        Once this is done, you will need to submit:-

-          an 'Electricity Supply Enquiry' form, and

-          an 'Embedded Generating Installation' form.

-         (These forms are available on our website)

-         Our Planning Department will then arrange to visit you.

-         Where can I find a list of certified installers?

-        We cannot recommend specific installers; however, we can direct you to the following websites for list of certified installers:

-        British Photovoltaic Society: http://www.greenenergy.org.uk/pvuk2/index.html

-        Combined Heat and Power Association: http://www.chpa.co.uk/directory.htm

-        British Wind Energy Association:  http://www.bwea.com

-         Are there any certified installers based in Jersey?

-        We are not aware, at present, of any locally based certified installers.

-        However, we will accept the installation, if:-

-          It is done by a local electrician, and

-         it complies with:-

-        UK wiring regulations and

-        UK standards such as engineering recommendations G83 or G59.

-         What does the JEC charge me for the necessary metering equipment?

-        There is no charge to fit an extra 'buy back' meter beside your existing meter.

-        However, if your existing meter is indoors, we will require to move it to an outside position, which will incur a standard charge.

-        Our planning department can advise of costs, when they make their site visit.

-         Why do you buy my electricity for less than what you sell it for?

-        Our normal electricity rates have to include the cost to us, of :-

-         transmission,

-         distribution,

-         operation and

-         maintenance

-         plus the cost of the raw cost of electricity.

-        So, when we are buying electricity from you, we are simply buying the raw cost of the electricity.

-         The UK have subsidies for renewable generators:-  are there any here?

-        Unfortunately, Government subsidies such as Renewable Obligation Certificates or Climate Change Levies which are offered in the UK and Europe are not available in Jersey at the present time.

-          Can I buy my wind turbine or photovoltaic cells from France?

-        Yes, however, it must:-

-          be installed to meet with UK wiring regulations, and

-          to comply with UK standards such as engineering recommendations G83 or G59.

-        Your installer should be aware of these requirements.

-         Is it worth installing a wind turbine? / Will I get my money back through this tariff?

-        To be realistic, in most cases, small renewable generators do not export to the network.

-        Whatever power is generated, is normally consumed by the household.

-        It is unlikely, therefore, that your 'buy back' meter will record many units.

-        The most likely way you will make savings is by reducing your demand of electricity from the network, and thus reducing the amount of your bills.

-        Our advice would be to talk to an installer or electrician who can tell you if it is a feasible option, and whether they think you should expect to see any savings.

-         What's better, - solar panels or photovoltaic panels?

-        There are pro's and con's for both.

-        In most cases, solar panels are more efficient, because the energy from the sun is used to directly heat water,

-        Photovoltaic panels convert the solar energy into electricity, and then back to heat the house.

-        As previously advised, we recommend that you talk to a certified installer or electrician to see which option best suits your household.

-         Do the Buy Back Rates include GST?

 -        No, GST is excluded as it does not apply to domestic customers, non registered commercial customers and ISE's.
