JERSEY
ELECTRICITY TAKES THE LEAD
ON ENERGY SAVINGS
INITIATIVE
Jersey Electricity has donated £½ million to the
establishment of an Independent Body "Sustainable Energy Jersey
(SEJ) whose early focus will be on providing financial and
practical help to reduce the energy bills of low income, poorly
insulated households. The setting up of SEJ is one of the
several initiatives announced today by the Chief Minister in "A
Vision for a GreenerIsland".
Jersey Electricity's Chief Executive Mike Liston said "The
only sustainable responses to soaring world energy costs and
runaway Climate Change are to take as much carbon as possible out
of our energy and then use as little as possible of what
remains." He said that as the Channel Islands' largest energy
supplier Jersey Electricity had switched to virtually zero carbon
electricity which had enabled Jersey to reduce its carbon emissions
by 36% in the past 15 years, but added the challenge for Jersey to
"do its bit in the global battle against Climate Change" requires
action by energy users as well as suppliers, to use less of what is
becoming an expensive and finite commodity. Mr. Liston said
that "Even though the case for financial assistance with energy
efficiency measures in homes is clear, politicians in Jersey have
shown themselves less prepared than those in other developed
countries to take action on sustainability. They seem
particularly reluctant to acknowledge that such action costs
money. Jersey Electricity's £½m will help towards the £2m or
so each year that SEJ will need if it is going to provide enough
advice and grant aid to users of all forms of energy, to help our
Island deal with the very real threat of a warming world, which is
also running out of oil."
