Our congratulations go to India Hamilton and Kaspar Wimberley, winners of the 2019 Jersey Electricity-sponsored Pride of Jersey Environmentalists Award. The co-founders of SCOOP, a food co-operative in St Lawrence, were presented with their award by JE Human Resources Director Andrew Welsby at a ceremony hosted by former England footballer Graeme Le Saux and Jersey-born soprano Georgi Mottram at Le Manoir de Rooster, Trinity, last night.
SCOOP opened in October 2018 offering Islanders sustainable and healthier food. India and Kaspar have gathered a group of like-minded farmers, growers, volunteers, paid staff, cooperative members and the general public who find a warm welcome at SCOOP.
India and Kaspar want to encourage sustainable agriculture, the protection of our natural resources and environment, the health of the people who live here and the wellbeing of future generations. They believe in looking after the soil and water, giving organic farmers a cohesive marketplace, raising awareness for how food is produced, promoting sustainability, recycling packaging and thereby waging a war on single-use plastic and general waste.
India and Kaspar beat fellow Environmentalist Award finalists Littlefeet Environmental, run by Courtney Huisman and Andy Farmer, and Sonia Lavery of Mini Mall, Jersey’s first zero waste store.
Presenting the award, Mr Welsby said: ‘Protecting the environment has always been a priority for Jersey Electricity but today, with the relentless heating of our world, ‘global warming’ has been elevated to a ‘climate emergency’ and everyone is now very much alive to this reality.
'The good news is Jersey is ahead of many other jurisdictions as we have a virtually decarbonised electricity supply already. But of course, there is more to protecting our natural world than clean air as the finalists and nominees for this year’s award have demonstrated. They all deserve all our thanks, as do those who nominated them.’
