Parish's first step of many in the fight against climate change
The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, and St Ouen Constable, Deputy Richard Buchanan, have officially opened Jersey’s 53rd Evolve public electric vehicle (EV) charging point in St Ouen Parish Hall car park.
The 22kW dual charger will give the typical EV 22 kilometres of range with just a 10-minute charge and marks the latest expansion of the Island’s public charging network by Jersey Electricity. In the last 12 months JE has invested in 30 charge points, including an additional two 50kW rapid chargers in the East and West of the Island.
The expansion reflects growing EV ownership in Jersey which is up by 263 year-on-year to 835 all-electric vehicles registered. Pure electric cars were up 204 to 578 and commercial vans rose by 30 to 141. Electric motorcycles are also gaining in popularity, almost doubling to 68. Hybrid vehicles have increased by over 200 to 1209.
Constable Richard Buchanan said: ‘This charging point will be a great asset to both Parishioners and visitors to the Parish. I’d like to thank JE for their support. We are committed to implementing even more measures in the future to make St Ouen an environmentally friendly Parish.’
Deputy Kevin Lewis said: ‘I am delighted to see another Parish joining the family of electric car charging points throughout the Island. Transport accounts for over 50% of our carbon emissions; support for the use of electric vehicles will help us on our way to lowering these levels.’
JE Director of Commercial Services Peter Cadiou said: ‘Our investment in the Island’s public charging infrastructure is in support of the Government’s 2030 carbon neutrality ambitions and to give confidence to those considering moving to electric transport. We’ve been delighted to work with St Ouen’s Parish which released the spaces for this latest installation. Importantly, we have future-proofed it to simplify the addition of more chargers when required.’
