Normandie 3: We're almost there

Our 10-year project to install a third interconnector to France and adjoining land cables is now almost complete.

After a long and complex planning process, this year has seen the safe and successful installation of the 32km, 100MW subsea cable from Armanville to Gorey, the 19km French land cable from the coast to Périers and the Jersey land cable from Gorey to South Hill Switching Station at Mount Bingham, plus a range of complex ancillary equipment.

An engineering project of this scale has presented us and our contract partners Prysmian Powerlink, who manufactured and installed the cable, and our local civil works contractors here in Jersey, Jayen Ltd., with many technical and organisational challenges. It is a credit to all concerned that the project as whole remains on budget and ahead of schedule.

Jersey Electricity would like to thank Islanders, especially motorists and those who reside along the Jersey land cable route in the east, for their patience and co-operation during the works that have necessitated considerable traffic management.

Though the power cable installation is mostly complete, some works are still on-going in the area of Green Road and Gréve D’Azette. Works will continue in this area for several more days and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience these are causing. We and our contractors will endeavour to complete these works as quickly as possible.

Testing and commissioning of the cables and the system as a whole will commence over the coming weeks and we expect the cable to be in full service before the end of the year, ahead of schedule.
