We have begun work on a £1m project to increase the import capacity of our Normandie 2 (N2) French subsea supply cable that was installed in 2000. When complete, the joint capacity of N2 and N1, which follow identical routes from St Remy des Landes to Archirondel, will increase from 145MW to 163MW. When combined with N3, installed in 2014 and which runs along a more southerly route from Periers to Gorey, the three links will provide the Channel Islands with a total of 263MW of clean, low carbon electricity, a third of which is from renewable hydro power plants.

We have begun work on a £1m project to increase the import capacity of our Normandie 2 (N2) French subsea supply cable that was installed in 2000. When complete, the joint capacity of N2 and N1, which follow identical routes from St Remy des Landes to Archirondel, will increase from 145MW to 163MW.

When combined with N3, installed in 2014 and which runs along a more southerly route from Periers to Gorey, the three links will provide the Channel Islands with a total of 263MW of clean, low carbon electricity, a third of which is from renewable hydro power plants.

Like the cable installations, themselves, this is another joint Channel Islands Electricity Grid (CIEG) project between Jersey and Guernsey Electricity. To achieve the increased capacity, the CIEG and French network operators RTE have agreed to replace the land cable in France between the N2 subsea cable and the substation at St Remy des Landes, which connects us to the French grid.

The work should be complete by early November in time to meet the Island’s higher demands as we approach winter.

JE Operations Director Mark Preece said: ‘This is an important piece of work that further increases our capability to import reliable, low cost, low carbon supplies and will enable us to meet even the winter demand peaks in this way.’
