Running costs - oil and gas explained

When your customer is thinking about fuel switching, they’ll probably ask about running costs. So how do running costs compare when changing fuel? Every situation is different but remember these top three pointers so you can give your client accurate advice.

Gas to electricity

1. Even the best gas boilers are only 95% efficient, with older models as low as 65% efficient. Electric heating is 100% efficient instantly reducing your customer's energy requirement by 5-35%!

2. Gas standing charges range from £123 per year to over £1000 per year! Moving to an electric heating tariff from the general domestic tariff will only cost you an additional £11 meaning your customer will instantly start saving!

3. Electric boilers require an annual check rather than an annual service. As well as being a quicker process (lower labour costs) there are fewer parts that wear and require replacement.

Oil to electricity

1. Even the best oil boilers are only 95% efficient, with older models as low as 65% efficient. Electric heating is 100% efficient instantly reducing your customer's energy requirement by 5-35%!

2. Oil tanks need to be bunded, in good condition and compliant with building bye laws. If your customer has an old tank they could face a large bill for a replacement.

3. Electric boilers require an annual check rather than an annual service. As well as being a quicker process (lower labour costs) there are fewer parts that wear and require replacement.

... and don't forget! Jersey Electricity’s prices are fixed until January 2018. The international oil and gas markets are far more volatile, meaning your customer’s bills could also be subject to the same volatility.
