Have you worked at JE since you left full-time education?
After leaving school, I completed a diploma in Butchery & Retail Organisation. After working full time, I became a Relief Shop Manager and later Shop Manager, for the Dewhurst Butchers chain. From there, I joined the Air Training Corps as a Civilian Instructor, later working for ICI Image Data as a Packer and subsequently a Machine Operator before joining JE in 2006.
What was your first role at JE?
My first role was a six-month part-time contract in Logistics. I started with the online business before it went live, helping to receive the goods and making sure all items were booked in and matched our item cards using descriptions and barcoding all the goods that came in.
What made you go for that role?
I had just moved to the Island and my relevant stores experience helped me to land the role. I had a positive experience right from the recruitment stage which led me to believe that JE would be a good company to work for, so I happily accepted!
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
Working in Logistics, I was able to renew my forklift licence. As I continued to develop, I was given IT training in Microsoft Excel and Word to manage the stores systems which enabled me to progress into office work. I have always looked for opportunities to develop and have completed First Aid and Fire Warden training and currently operate in the company as a Health and Safety Rep. After working in Logistics for some time, a job opening came up in Accounts Payable. I felt I had some of the necessary skills as in the course of my daily duties I would often help with resolving discrepancies that were holding up payment of invoices and I had already established a good rapport with the team. I successfully joined the team and JE supported me in undertaking a professional qualification accredited by the International Association of Bookkeepers. This has equipped me with the accounting skills to support other departments within the company where financial cashflow needs to be carefully managed and monitored. I have since advanced to Team Leader of Accounts Payable and I continue to enhance my skills outside my role with courses like The Living Leader, writing skills and mindfulness training. With the support of JE we joined the Accounts Payable Association. This corporate affiliation has enabled us to collaborate and exchange knowledge with other businesses around the UK, Europe and the US.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
JE encourages you to speak up when you want to discuss your future development within the company. There are so many opportunities to study and attain professional qualifications that lead to career advancement. You can also learn skills that help you grow professionally and personally.
Finally, what advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?
Always be open to new opportunities, never stop learning and take the initiative if you have ideas of your own, because you might just be onto something!

Have you worked at JE since you left full-time education?
After I left school I worked in retail for a short time while I considered what I wanted to do. My parents spotted an opening at JE and encouraged me to apply. I started out as a Junior assistant before moving into the Cost Office as a Troubleshooter. I then moved onto Accounts and then Customer Care.
What was your first role at JE?
My first role was a Junior in Central File. A typical day involved opening the mail in the morning then taking numerous files around the company and distributing the correspondence. I had to fold a large quantity of letters and accounts statements by hand and frank them. I also had to serve tea and biscuits at the monthly board meetings. I became very good at tea-making!
What made you go for that role?
A family friend worked at JE and recommended it to my parents. I was only 16 and nervous about navigating my way around every department in the company. I had to learn everyone’s name so that they got the correct mail. This did me a huge favour as it helped me make friends quickly and built my confidence.
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
I have developed many skills over the last 30 years at JE. I have been a Trouble Shooter for Finance where I trained up to become a Cashier. Then I moved to Accounts where I worked in credit control dealing with changes of tenancies and working with customers to create payment schemes. My Manager was a great mentor and friend. I later moved to Customer Care where I managed all incoming customer queries and helped supervise the day to day running of the department. I have now come around full circle as I am back in the Finance department as a Finance Assistant where I feel very much at home. I have learned a great deal throughout my journey with opportunities to study Management and Leadership Development courses.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
JE is very supportive with dedicated HR people who are focused on how every individual can develop in their roles.
Finally, what advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?
JE is an inspiring, friendly and wonderful company to work for. Seize every opportunity that comes your way, from professional training to vocational courses, and never stop learning!
