Have you worked at JE since you left full-time education?

I started my career in this field by working summer holidays within the Engineer department at the Airport, for two years prior to leaving secondary school. This helped me secure a place on the States of Jersey Apprenticeship electrician programme (which at the time was very difficult to do, because of demand).

What was your first role at JE?

I was training at Highlands College at the time and Jack Hill - Distribution Engineer (David Padfield’s predecessor) who lectured me at Highlands College, suggested that I should consider a career development role at JE as a Trainee Engineer, which I put my name forward for following his recommendation, this was one of two taken on by JE at that time. This then started a very interesting and rewarding journey for me.

What made you go for that role?

I felt it was a good opportunity to further my career.

How have your skills developed during your time with JE?

JE have been very supportive in putting me through a post HNC, diploma/degree course, which then enabled me to bridge across to an MSC at Glasgow university, all of which was undertaken whilst gaining practical working experience across all JE departments.

I helped to set up Jersey Energy as a business unit in the early 1990’s and then eventually became the Managing Consultant (director of that business).

How has JE supported your career decisions?

I believe JE have always been open to career development and willing to invest in staff who show the appetite and commitment to want to progress.

JE don’t do everything, it’s about mutual commitment and I have always committed whilst JE has always been supportive in helping me to further my career.

JE is a very diverse business and this has made my role very interesting over the years.

Finally, what advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?

Work hard, commit with a longer-term view and take some risks to get where you want to be. I came from a standard career background through the states of jersey secondary school system with average grades, but a very strong determination in my chosen field to be the best I could be.
