Breathing new life into agricultural land
Jersey now has the chance to pioneer innovative and more sustainable farming methods, including "agrivoltaics". As well as a solar array, this site is home to a flock of around 100 sheep who will graze underneath the solar panels. The sheep thrive in the panels’ shade, naturally maintaining the specially sown grasses, which reduces the need for mechanical grass cutting. We’re supporting Panigot Farm to bring the Island’s next produce, locally-reared Jersey lamb, to local restaurants.
Jersey's first solar shepherd
From first hearing about plans for a solar farm in 2022, Jeremy Hughes now has more than 100 sheep grazing around the panels at Moulin à Vent.
Sheep are the perfect partner for solar panels. We’re proud to support Jersey’s farming industry grow and diversify.

Jersey’s first ground-mount solar farm is now generating electricity for the local community
With the 4.3MWp site now live, we’ve doubled Jersey’s solar generating capacity.
The site at Moulin a Vent in St Clement is a true community project owned by the Island, providing power for the Island. It will power the equivalent of 14% of Jersey homes, every year for the next 40 years.
JE’s CEO Chris Ambler shares his thoughts on this important moment in Jersey’s energy story.

Project benefits
Nectar-rich pasture supports pollinators and other invertebrates.
Improvements in soil quality and carbon sequestration.
The site will emit zero emissions and is constructed from recyclable materials.
Resting the land from high intensity agriculture allows diverse wildflower meadows and native grasses to grow, creating important natural habitats for pollinators, insects, birds, and small mammals.
Ecological studies indicate significant improvement in Biodiversity Net Gain (improvements of 218% habitat units and 250% hedgerow units as per DEFRA methodology).
Renewable energy production and diversification of Jersey's energy.
