Rosie Rees, who helped bring this scheme to life, tells us more about the cameras.

What was the idea behind the scheme?

We know that many customers would like to save energy, and one way to help them do this is to understand where energy is escaping from their homes.

Once we understand where our homes are losing heat, we can take steps to plug those gaps – which helps customers to reduce their electricity bills and carbon footprint, while increasing the comfort of their homes.

How do the cameras work?

The cameras connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth and show you where heat is escaping from your home using different colours to show different temperatures. The cameras work best when outside temperatures are much lower than indoor, so most useful in the winter.

How many times were the cameras loaned out during the first winter?

70, which far exceeded our expectations. We had to add three more cameras halfway through the scheme to keep up with demand!

What feedback did customers have about the thermal imaging cameras?

We tracked customer feedback scores and the average score was 4.9 / 5. Customers appreciated how easy the camera were to use and that they could quickly assess where heat was escaping.

Will the scheme be back in winter 2024?

Yes! Customers really valued being able to use the thermal cameras, for free, so we will definitely bring the scheme back. Keep an eye out on our social channels and website for more information next autumn.
