Tell us about yourself

I’m an apprentice craft person for underground cable jointing within JE’s Service Delivery team.

What inspired you to start your apprenticeship?

The apprenticeship role appealed to me as I welcomed the opportunity to challenge myself and learn new skill sets in a thriving industry, with a company that has a long-established history in Jersey.

Within JE there is plenty of opportunity to progress and move roles. I used to work in the stores department, and I wanted to change. Every step of the way JE gives you the encouragement and help needed to achieve that. JE was really encouraging when I said I wanted to progress down this new and exciting career path.

Tell us about a typical day

I start my day at the yard (La Collette Distribution Building), grab a coffee and have a quick chat with my colleagues before we receive our jobs for the day. I am then paired up with a jointing colleague and we head out to site. Once there I help out by being a jointer’s mate, which involves taking equipment and tools to the pit, collecting equipment from the van or preparing cable. I’m always busy and the team will always answer any questions I may have.

What do you enjoy about the apprentice scheme?

As apprentices do real jobs in genuine work environments, you gain softer skills that will help you throughout your career and grow your confidence, such as team work, effective communication and problem solving. It’s more than just a qualification and job experience.

I see myself as an integral part of the company who has helped contribute to the growth and success of the organisation. I would like to continue developing my skills and knowledge to be able to take on more responsibility and progress to a trainee electrical engineer.

JE is inviting school groups and individuals to come along to an open afternoon on 23 February at La Collette to learn more about JE’s apprentice scheme and talk to professionals about careers at JE. To sign up please contact Skills@jec.co.uk or just pop along to learn more about what we do.
