SUPPORTING THOSE WHO HELP CHILDREN TO STAY SAFE
Jersey Electricity is pleased to again support Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ) Safety In Action. The excellent initiative sees a range of organisations, including Family Nursing and Home Care (FNHC), the Fire and Rescue Service, St John Ambulance, States of Jersey Police, Headway, Prison Me No Way, the Bosdet Foundation and Trading Standards join forces to provide safety training to over 1,000 Year 5 pupils during eight days of workshops at Highlands College. The children, in small teams, take part in six, fact-packed, interactive 20-minute workshops covering Safety in the Kitchen, Road Safety, Safe Play, Water Safety, Fire and First Aid.
FNHC’s CAP Co-Ordinator Mandy Le Tensorer said: ‘ All but two of Jersey Primary Schools are taking part. This year we have changed the Beach Safety workshop to Water Safety so it includes inland water dangers that children won’t see in Jersey but could come across on holiday.’
The grand finale is always the spectacular – and frightening – demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Service of what happens to a chip pan fire if you try and extinguish it with water. It’s definitely not the thing to do as the children saw when small flames from the burning pan of oil erupted over three metres high as the firefighter poured just a small cup of liquid on to them.
