British Safety Council trustees chair Lynda Armstrong OBE presents Jersey Electricity CEO Chris Ambler with the Sword of Honour
Jersey Electricity has been awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour by the British Safety Council at a ceremony in the City of London’s historic Goldsmiths’ Hall. The Company is one of only 68 organisations worldwide to receive the award this year in recognition of excellence in the management of Health and Safety.
In order to compete for the Sword of Honour, an organisation must have achieved the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council’s Health and Safety Management Audit scheme in the period August 2012 – July 2013. Jersey Electricity also had to demonstrate to an adjudication panel, comprising expert health and safety and environment management practitioners, a culture that exemplified best practice throughout the business from shop floor to the boardroom.
Lynda Armstrong OBE, chair of the trustees of the British Safety Council, said: ‘Our warmest congratulations to Jersey Electricity on winning the Sword of Honour. These awards recognise and celebrate the excellence of the winning organisations and their employees in managing health, safety and environmental risks.
‘Winning organisations share a commitment and resolve to achieve the highest standards of health, safety and/ or environmental management and to keep their employees and those affected by their work activities healthy and safe. We wish the winning organisations continuing success.’
Jersey Electricity CEO Chris Ambler said: ‘Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our customers, contractors, staff and all those who could be affected by our operations. By their very nature our business and activities pose risks if not properly managed. This award is credit, not only to the commitment of our Health and Safety Representatives and team members, but to our entire staff, across all business areas, for their care and diligence.
‘The award follows our second successive year with zero Lost Time Accidents (LTAs). This, too, is a remarkable achievement, considering the nature of our business, the huge operational changes we have undertaken this year in re-mobilising La Collette Power Station, including the deployment of many non-English speaking contractors, and the hazardous conditions in which our overhead restoration teams performed in March’s blizzards.’
A small delegation, that included one of the linesmen involved in the blizzards restorations, attended the Sword of Honour awards presentation luncheon at Goldsmiths’ Hall last week.
