Your home Help & advice New builds & renovations Additional electrical load

If you are increasing the amount of electricity your domestic property will use, you may need to install additional electrical load.

Common situations that require an installation of additional electrical load are:

  • Installing a new electric heating system
  • Extending a domestic property
  • Installing a range cooker
  • Installing an electric vehicle charge
  • Installing an electric power shower

To find out if you need to install additional electrical load in your domestic property, please complete the following steps before your chosen electrical contractors start their installation or renovation works.

Step 1 - Complete an Electricity Supply Enquiry (ESE) form

To complete an Electricity Supply Enquiry (ESE) form you will need to provide the following:

  • The existing load in kilowatts (kW)
  • The proposed new electrical load in kilowatts (kW)

The ESE form is an editable PDF. You can complete it using a computer, or print it and fill it out by hand.

The ESE should be completed by a person with a good knowledge of the property's required electrical loads. If your are not confident you can accurately work out the property's required electrical load, we recommend asking an experienced electrical contractor to complete the ESE on your behalf.

Step 3 - Confirming the suitability of your current load

If your current supply meets your proposed needs, we'll write confirming this within 15 working days. Your electrical contractor can then get on with the work.

If your current supply is not adequate, we will write to tell you what we need to do.

Changing your meter

If you need a different meter because you are upgrading or downgrading your service, or changing tariff, you will also need to submit a Connection of Meter form quoting your ESE number from your confirmation letter.

Please send your completed form to our Metering Team by the following methods:
