Radiator systems explained

Radiators form part of a whole-house central heating system which usually includes:

  • A boiler or heat pump
  • Pipework
  • Multiple radiators
  • Heating controls

The boiler or heat pump heats water, which is then pumped through pipework to radiators and back for reheating.

Heating controls such as timers, room thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves, which can all be smart enabled, help you maximise the efficiency of your system.

Radiators love electric

When used with an electric boiler or heat pump, wet radiators are a very efficient way to heat your home. Jersey's electricity supply is virtually decarbonised. This makes installing an electric boiler or heat pump one of the most effective ways to reduce your home's carbon footprint.

Things to consider before installing radiators

You can install radiators in any room. Things to consider are:

  • Heat – what output do I need to effectively warm the room?
  • Size – how will the radiator look in my room?
  • Style – steel, aluminium, long or tall, modern or traditional?
  • Finish - white or another colour?
  • Location – are there pipes nearby?
